Agile AL-2000 Blue Flame Review

Starting to learn bass guitar (I chose the Silvertone LB11, which I have also reviewed) ended up making me realize two things.1: Bass is really fun, and a cool instrument.And 2: You can't play everything on it.So chances are, eventually you'll want a guitar like I did.But although I was pretty sure I would like learning guitar as well, I didn't want to spend a lot of money on a top-of-the-line model.Still, understandably, I wanted something solid.I asked around on Internet forums and Rondo Music's guitars were recommended.Searching them had me stumble upon the AL-2000 line, which seemed to come with nothing but positive reviews everywhere I looked.So I spent a few days deciding on the perfect color for me, and ended up picking the Blue Flame model offered here.

I've only had this guitar for a few days, and have much to learn.But sometimes it's easy to discern quality.The moment I took the protective foam lining from the body of the guitar, I knew I had picked the perfect one.And as soon as I plugged it in, I was assured.My friend who has played guitar for three years or so was around when I opened it, and he agreed that I had picked a great first guitar.

Everything is held together well, and the body feels extremely durable.The finish seems perfect, although the flame isn't as pronounced as I had thought.It still looks great, and is more of a sea blue in the middle, with the accented parts and pick guard being cream-colored rather than white like the pictures seem to portray.The metal-looking control knobs are more of a dark amber color and semi-see through.

The sound, even through the cheap-o amp I got in my bass package, is incredibly clean and crisp, with a light twang of an undertone depending on how you have the settings.I really don't think it could sound better.I strongly believe the Agile AL-2000 looks and sounds like a $700 guitar, so for the offered price it's a steal.

That being said, there is one main drawback--this thing is heavy.Quite heavy.Even more so than my bass, which is no lightweight.My bathroom scale puts it at around 11 pounds, but it feels like more than that.And it's all in the body.That weight is no reason to actually avoid buying the guitar, but it's something to be aware of.Also, the guitar was shipped in only the plain, semi-shaped case scrawled with the Agile logo, and held inside with a few formed pieces of cardboard and wrapped in a thin Styrofoam wrap.It arrived in pristine condition, but the method of packing is questionable.

Still, don't pass this up if you're looking for a high-quality, "budget" guitar.

Seymour Duncan AHB-1 Blackouts Active Humbucker Guitar Pickup Set Review

I replaced the stock ESP LTD pickups in my LTD 251HM with Blackouts and they have turned a practice guitar into a scream machine.They have great dynamics and good balance with added lower mids which make my 5150 seem a great deal thicker.I would give them 5 stars but the electronics are completely disassembled.EMGs have some of the wiring done when you get them so they will take longer to install.The posts on the pots were wider than stock so I had to drill out the holes to make them fit.These can supposedly be swapped out with EMGs which I'm considering because they are superior to your standard EMG 81 85 set in tone.We'll see how the newer SD metal and EMG X series pups compare.It looks like there are a ton of new choices for actives and the quality of these pups I think re-energized the industry.

Kyser 12 String Guitar Capo (Standard) Review

If you own a 12-string guitar, you already know you need a longer capo for anything below the fifth fret. This capo is longer, beefier, and with a stronger spring than its 6-string brother.

Another less obvious benefit is the stronger spring makes it work better that the smaller 6-string capo. For the sake of intonation and pitch, I capo as close to the fret as possible. When capoing VERY close to, or on top of the fret using the 6-string capo, the smaller (higher pitched) low E string would sometimes buzz because is was not being pressed firmly on the fret (because its big fat twin was keeping the rubber of the capo too far above the fret). The stronger spring of this 12-string model forces both strings firmly against the fret, so there is no buzzing, even when capoing right on the fret.

Back in 2007, I wrote a glowing review of the Intelli IMT500 Backlit Clip Style Tuner.I stand by that review.The Intelli is vastly superior to the Intellitouch PT1 Tuner and one need only go to local jams or picking parties to see how the Intelli and rebranded Intellis have taken over.I've purchased a half-dozen of the Intellis so that I'd have one in each of my regularly used cases. I have not had a chance to try the Intellitouch PT10 Mini Clip-on Chromatic Tuner, but it looks so similar to the Intelli that it's hard not to conclude that Intellitouch had to introduce it to remain viable.

Recently a friend let me try his Zoid.I found that the color changing display was such a helpful aid in tuning that I went out and bought three--one for my most frequently used guitar, one for my practice area, and one for my music partner.

Back in 2007 and up 'till now, the Intelli was a "must have" even (especially?) if one owned an Intellitouch.The Zoid is not like that, that is, I'm not recommending that one replace every Intelli with a Zoid, but if one has neither, I'd give the nod to the Zoid.

I'm not really sure what to think of this tab book yet. Overall its decent but I have found a mistake already. It seems that they have messed up on the tunings on a few songs. Most of the Ghost Reveries album is in a D minor tuning which isn't the case for some of the songs in this book.

In the song Ghost of Perdition they have the main guitars being in two different tunings. Which would be fine if Opeth never played this song live but...they do. When the clean section of the song kicks in the guitars are in a different tuning than they were a second ago, if the members could freeze time and change guitars or tune it would be ok otherwise they messed up here. This has sort of damaged the credibility for me so do not believe that these songs are 100 %.

After watching an interview with Mikael during his Guitarworld session he even says that they tuned in that (DADFAE) tuning. I thought people producing and tabing out the songs had to contact the musicians to make sure they were correct? Oh well this is what it is.

SongXpress Classic Blues, Vol 3 (DVD) (1999) Review

This will be a similar review I wrote for Vol. 2 of Classic Blues.It is more of a heads up to those who used to own the VHS tapes.

I used to have the VHS tape for vol. 1 and I must say it was a very well done product. I particular enjoy the performances of the ENTIRE song at the end of the lesson. Dan Warner would play the whole blues song with the solos and with no band backing him up. Just a vocalist playing rhythm.

It was awesome. I learned so much watching him do his solos.

BUT the DVD versions of these tapes no longer show entire performances. They edit the original production so as the entire performance is never displayed.

I was very disappointed with the editing done for the DVDs.

But you are just a beginner, I guess this product will do.

Barcus-Berry 1457 Outsider Quick Mount Guitar Pickup Review

I used this on a Seagull Grand guitar. Because of small sound whole. Sound was way to muddy-boomy to use. Bought a boss equalizer pedalin an attempt to fix sound, but even that did not work. Stickers that attach pickup to guitar are nothing special and when I tried to remove half stayed with guitar.The cord will also feedback if touched. This item is hard to find, guess I found out why. This is just a very poor unusable product.

DVD-Blues By The Book #1 Review

I have just started to learn fingerstyle acoustic blues.I have been working out of two (2) books both found on Amazon: 1) Beginning Fingerstyle Blues Guitar by Berle and Galbo and 2) Fingerstyle Blues Songbook by Steve James - both excellent and great for the beginner.But I was getting to the point that I wanted something a little extra - some coaching that I could get into and learn from.This is the DVD lesson that will do that (for me and you!).Roy is easy going, and he makes learning fun.He starts slow and adds licks, flourishes, turn-arounds and endings and does it in a way that will have you laughing and learning and in a bit - amazed that you are doing it as well.My only comment that could even be a bit negative is in reply to his statement that he wonders why any one would want to play like him, well I understand that we need to devote time and study and having fun so that we can sound like ourselves, but Roy, it would be wonderful if we could play (and sound) just a bit like you.Highly recommended!!!!!

I'm 54 years of age...that age when most guitar players reminisce about playing in bands when they were much younger.Like many, perhaps an acoustic guitar close at hand to plunk on.I played rock, blues...was a frontman in the big hair 80's era. After watching a number of Antoine Dufour and Andy McKee videos of their phenomenal modern acoustic folk instrumental play and buying their music, becoming essentially a fan...I had to buy my first of several short capos.Seeing Antoine finger tap, play above the capo...well all quite amazing.

I bought one of these short capos, then two...and now play as many as 3 capos at a time to create intriguing alternative tunings.The fingerstyle or strum/flat picking becomes so intuitive, and I've enjoyed many a good night now entertaining friends at dinners and get togethers.I don't need to play established songs but your ear hears variations easily and those that have some ability to make up songs on the spot will go nuts playing these capos.It seriously makes you a much better player in everyone's mind.I have played out publically again and produced a number of CD's of my own.It is like experiencing a rebirthing on the guitar and only wished I would have had something like the Kyser short capo about 25 years ago!

No matter where I play out publically folks are quite taken by the sound, which strikes you as though nearly two guitar players were playing.Has real presence. Guitar players can't help but come out of the wood work to approach near and watch, and are immediately taken in and ask..."where the heck do you get one of those?"

I would recommend David Wilcox's "The Partial Capo" book to help you discover the chord possibilites...the basics, tricks and so forth.I was and still am a long time electric guitar player, fan, lovin' the blues especially...but have rediscovered the acoustic guitar over the past three years or so.Don't hesitate to buy one of these and don't be surprised not to see regular music stores not carry them as they operate by supply and demand, and folks don't know what they are...but I knowwithout a doubt that if I set up in a music store and just played freely the store would order a bunch of 'em and always have them on hand!Get one!Get two!

The Blues and Beyond (with CD) [Paperback] Review

Extremely informative and easy to understand although it is a big advantage if you happen to be a skilled sight reader. Nevertheless there is a tablature format for those who aren't. Your technique and knowledge of chordal harmony will most definitely improve after you peruse the pages.
The analysis of Robben Fords stunning version of "Aint Got Nothin' But The Blues" in the last section of this bookis second to none. It's very accurate and the chordal variations are beautiful to the ear. The music notation is very comfortable to read and not done in tiny print. I know it sounds odd to note this point but so many books have print that is virtually impossible to read unless you have access to interrogation cell lighting or a magnifying glass strapped to your forehead.
The block positions for mixolydian/pentatonic scales are nicely arranged. They are easy to remember.
This isn't a very thick book and is ideal for those, like me, who have a short attention span and can't process lots of spurious details.
Robben gives you just the right amount of information, just enough to stir the imagination.

I don't know what's going on with Amazon as I've reviewed this before and it, and all the other reviews are gone.Anyway I've had this book for a year and I know it pretty well.First of all I am a novice, basement player with no formal training and I can't read music.This book has some easy songs to learn (hoochie coochie man) and harder (read impossible for me) Pride and Joy.Most songs take some practice but I've learned them pretty well to the point I can jam with a drummer and sound like I know what I'm doing.I put the CD in my computer so I can stop, start, and rewind or fast forward little bits at a time to get a phrase right.You aren't going to be taught scales or technique but with practice you'll know some blues tunes.My one complaint is that the TAB isn't always accurate.There are either added or missing notes that sometimes take a while to figure out.This is a minor point.The other thing I like to do is put difficult phrases onto my Jam Man and then I can loop it to learn it.The additional "minus guitar" tracks is also fun to improvise over.I wish there were more than 2 books in this series.

Allright, I'm sure you're trying to figure out which capo to get. To some people, it's not a big deal making this decision. I look at a capo as another instrument and not as an accessory! The G7(?) is over 40 and it really does not give you the value it says it provides. What I mean by this is that it is an awesome capo but not worth over $25. However, this Kyser capo (in any color) is exactly what a guitarist looks for, which is perfect sound and the ability to switch frets at any given time!!! When I purchased this capo I was between this one and the G7(?)and I truly would have still purchased this one if the prices were the same. I'd MUCH rather get two of these for two of my guitars!!! However, don't forget, this is ultimately your OWN choice. Try both out, I know many people are very satisfied with the G7(?), but as an added benefit, Kyser has several colors to choose from, I got this gold one because it looks really nice with my acoustic and its strings. I was so pleased with this guitar. It was my first acoustic guitar, but I am glad that I purchased this guitar. There was nothing wrong with the guitar- and for the price, it is absolutely worth it. It can be thrown (not literaly) around, and there is hardly a scratch. It was easy for me to play, and I plan on buying future guitars from Austin Bazaar. Only one bad thing- I received a red pick.

Modern Blues Jamtrax [Paperback] Review

This book and CD combination make a very nice practice and learning tool for the aspiring blues player. The book illustrates scales and licks in both standard notation and TAB. Chord progressions are shown for each of the 10 tracks on the CD. Various blues textures and keys are explored. Various rythm patterns are illustrated on the CD as well.
While this material could be used to some advantage by the neophyte, it assumes a basic familiarity with guitar, rythm, and picking basics, and with the blues genre as well. And though it correlates the scale patterns with the tracks in the various keys, it does not explain how to use them to improvise or construct solos (for this reason I withheld a fifth star). It also does not cover topics such as turnarounds, double stops, bends, slides, etc.
"Modern Blues Jamtrax" is best used with other blues instruction and lesson materials. I would highly recommend it for the advanced beginner or intermediate player on its value as a practice aid.

Barcus-Berry 1455-3 Insider Piezo Guitar Pickup w/Jack Review

I installed Barcus-Berry pickups in two of my guitars in the late 80's and they weren't great for amplification but they remain a great option for recording. In fact I recorded with one just weeks ago when the Fishman under saddle unit on the same guitar had a dead battery. So my plan was to hot rod a Martin DM with all three of my favorite acoustic pickup systems. However these new models of Barcus-Berry pickups aren't as good; low volume and muddled. They might do better than the old versions when amplified but for the recording purpose I looked for they are a miss.

Fishman FT1 Digital Tuner Review

This is a great little tuner at a great price.It's easy to use and set up.Most people will leave it et to 440 pitch, but it makes tuning up or down quite easy.It can be mic'd or use your instrument's vibration.It does seem to have a bit of a problem picking up string six, the low E, sometimes if you pick the string too strongly, but if plucked more gently, seems to work just fine.The "red" for out-of-tune, and the "green" for in-tune, works quite well in all light conditions.There are arrows pointing down or up; pointing in the direction to fine-tune the individual strings. This can be used on a wide variety of instruments, where you can clip it to the headstock or rim of an instrument.I use the chromatic setting almost all the time.
