I just love Etta Baker and am still sad that she has passed.I'm glad her music lives on.I bought this to help me learn to "play like Etta", in my dreams, of course.It did help, but I am not crazy about the guy that is interviewing her on the DVD.He almost seems a little rude to this fine lady.Maybe it's just me.You can always fast forward past his part to her wonderful playing.

Strobe Tuner With Four Display Modes

Meter mode
Similar to using a needle meter, tune your instrument with this pedal tuner so that the green LED in the center of the LED display lights and both tuning guide LED's are lit. The tuning LED's will be to the right of center if your instrument is sharp, and to the left of the center if it is flat.


Full Strobe mode
Using this pedal tuner, tune your instrument so that the LED meters stop streaming and both tuning guide LED's are lit. The LED meters will stream from left to right if your instrument is sharp and from right to left if it is flat.


Half Strobe mode
Tune your instrument so that the LED meters stop streaming and only the green LED in the center is lit and both tuning guide LEDs are lit. The LED meters will stream to the right of center if your instrument is sharp, and to the left of center if it is flat. When the pitch is correct, only the center LED will be lit.


Mirror mode
Tune your instrument with this pedal tuner so that the two LEDs on the left and right sides of the center LED meet in the middle and both tuning guide LED's are lit. The pitch lit LEDs will spread farther apart the more your instrument is out of tune. The left tuning guide will light if your instrument is flat, and the right tuning guide will light if it is sharp.

100% True Bypass output keeps your tone intact.
The Pitchblack mutes the input signal for silent tuning, and when you're not tuning, the input is passed directly to the output jack without being affected by any circuitry (True Bypass). Therefore, even if you connect the pedal tuner between several of your favorite pedals, the signal will pass without going through the internal buffer amp, ensuring that the sounds you've created using your effects will not be colored in any way. what can I really say?It's a capo.I never owned a capo before, so I wasnt sure if there was any major difference in the types, or if theyd work properly, but this model holds down all the strings on my yamaha F310 and works just fine.It doesnt cost so much, and does all I need it to do.I havent had any problems yet, so I'd recommend this thing.

The Diary of Alicia Keys (Piano/Vocal/Guitar Artist Songbook) [Paperback] Review

I'd purchased this songbook with high hopes based on the only reviews I could find (on the UK version of Amazon).I love Alicia Keys, and based on her wonderful piano accomplishments, I was eager to get this songbook.I am a vocalist and novice piano player, and there's nothing I love more than a challenging accompaniment to sing along to.Unfortunately, a majority of the songs have the melody written for the Treble Clef (right hand).I understand that it is most likely that way for singability, but I would find the piano part much more pleasurable in its original form.It is my pet peeve among common music songbooks.

Luckily, when there are no singing bits, take "Harlem's Nocturne" for example, you will find that the piano part is rather close to the original.I am also pleased with the guitar chords written in addition to a separate staff for vocal parts.Everything was clear and easy to read/comprehend.

One note!Several of these songs have been transposed for easier playability.I personally tend to prefer the original key, but that usually doesn't stop me.The changes include:

-Harlem's Nocturne (G# minor transposed down half-step)
-If I Was Your Woman (Eb minor transposed up half-step)
-Diary (G# minor transposed up half-step)
-Feeling U, Feeling Me (G# minor transposed up half-step)
-Samsonite Man (G# minor transposed up half-step)

Maybe this songbook needs time to grow on me, or maybe my expectations are too high.I'll continue to love Alicia Keys, regardless that this songbook isn't one that stands out the most to me.

Mahalo UNG-30BU Painted Uke-Guitar (Blue, Gig Bag) Review

I have one of these and I have been quite happy with it.

This is basically a small (3/4 size) classical guitar.The scale length is 19" vs. around 25" for a full-size.

For tuning, I tune it up to a "G" tuning, that is:GCFB-flatDG

With such short strings it takes a while for a new set to settle in, especially the third string (largest non-wound string). But the results are excellent once the strings stretch after a day or two.I use ordinary classical guitar strings (of course cut to length, as the scale is about 6" shorter than a full-size classical guitar).

This is a great little guitar which sounds beautiful and plays very well, with good intonation (i.e., accurate tuning).The wide neck and low string tension make it very easy to play. It would be an excellent choice for a first instrument for a young child, far superior to what most little kids get as a first guitar.

Also, it's a lot more playable and just as portable (even shorter in fact) than the popular "backpacker" style of guitar.

Highly recommended! Too bad they don't make one in the natural maple finish, I could do without the paint job, though it does look cool in Red, Blue, or Black.

Guitar Signature Licks: T-Bone Walker Review

Ok so Duke really turned me on to T-Bone.And Duke can really play.And now I want to play like that also but there's not enough tab or instructional break down to do that on this DVD.Yes Duke really captures the essence but doesn't convey how I might do the same. Camera shots could have been much better for helping do this and the tabulature could have much more extensive/complete.I'm glad I have it but it could have been much better for a teaching/learning tool.

D'Andrea 55 Triangle Delrex Delrin Guitar Picks One Dozen, Blue 1.0MM Review

The size and shape of these picks are awesome; they flex really nicely and are easy to play with. Out of the package they have a bit of white powder that will go away with a bit of use, and getting moisture and oils from your skin on it, it just feels powdery until it goes away, not a problem. They both look and feel thicker AND thinner than they actually are, with the amount of flex it has, it looks and feels thin, but with how big it is, it looks and feels thicker. These picks are just way outside of the norm. They look cool and are fun to play with, I would easily recommend them!

Dean Markley 2033 TLT Blue Steel Cryogenic Acoustic Guitar Strings Review

I bought these strings to replace the factory strings on a Skylark Chinese acoustic guitar.I wanted some light guage strings to make it feel more like an electric.I was impressed by the quality of the metal in these strings.The cryo treatment hardens the steel, making the more durable and stay tuned longer.On the down side the hardened steel also makes them harder to play.For light gauge strings, they felt more like heavy gauge strings.Maybe the LT 2034's or XL 2032's are better.After 2 weeks of wear and tear on my fingers, I put my factory strings back on my guitar.The Blue Steel strings made it almost impossible to play my guitar for more than 2 songs.

Crescent 43" Blue Chrome Electric Bass Guitar with Accessories & Guitar Stand Review

I bought this bass for my husband for his birthday as a starter instrument.It is very nice looking, it has silver candy under the blue paint so it really shines. The sound quality is fine. We've only had it a week and so far it's been perfect for what we purchased it for. There is some buzzing on the E and A strings, and I was dissapointed that they only sent one replacement G string. I don't know much about playing bass, but it seems to me if you're going to send one replacement string, shouldn't you send them all? The only other issue I have is that in the description, it says this package includes a carrying strap. I took that to mean the strap you put on the bass so you can play it while you are standing up. We didn't get a strap at all.The gig case is nice and the guitar stand is high quality. All-in-all it's worth the price, especially for begining players. I will be contacting the company to see what they mean by "carrying strap" and if they will do anything for me. If so, I will be writing a new review to include their customer service.

Mike Dowling : Uptown Blues Review

If your style is blues/swing/jazz with more than a touch of slide and alternate tuning,and you wish to move from intermediate to advanced playing, this will do the trick.But be under no illusions - to get the best out of these lessons, you have to practice.Mr Dowling is an experienced teacher as well as a great player.He makes no representations that there is an easy way to play this style of guitar.Whilst he walks you through the more difficult passages, he makes it clear that practice makes perfect.I venture to suggest that the companion book/cd is a must if you want to get the best out of these lessons.Also get Bottomlands and String Crazy and while you are at it, get a copy of Two of a Kind with Pat Donoghue.They are packed with great music, particularly Two of a Kind.This is not a Mike Dowling promo.It is just that if you are serious about extending you playing to emulate one of the finest players around, then the investment of less than $100 is small change. I am about half way through this, and already I notice it has taken my playing to a new level and to a greater understanding of this music. Unfortunately so many of the video lessons fall short.This delivers but it requires you do some work.Some of the playing takes some real effort - maybe it was me, but I needed some serious wood-shedding to get the 'In the Mood' roll under my fingers on Nitpickin', but was tickled pink when I did - in fact I used it with a bit of a twist when working through an impro of 'I saw Mummy kissing Santa Claus' with a pleasing result.What I appreciated best about this is that Mike takes the time to get the techniques down.This gives a solid grounding, whilst remaining interesting and challenging.The concert footage and camera angles are great.I will do an update on this when I have worked through it.I reckon that will take most of the winter, maybe more.By then I should be getting near to ready for one of Mike's camps or Wind River lessons - I've got the fly rod packed!This is highly recommended if you are a serious player and want to do the work.Mind you it is pretty good to have a Mike Dowling concert on tap as well!

Recording King Lap Steel Guitar, Natural Review

This was a huge disappointment.Read the ad and looked at the manufacturer's website and it looked like a great deal.

After arrival I unpacked the guitar and plugged it into my amp. Surprise! No sound.So I tried a different cable and still had no sound. Next, I took the back cover plate off to look at the wiring and discovered I had sound with the plate off.Put the cover plate back and had no sound.After rearranging the wires I eventually got the pickup to work with the back plate on but the sound was thin and scratchy and downright horrible.

The tuners were poorly made and the guitar would not stay in tune.The fingerboard was white and highly reflective and difficult to use for positioning (a must on a lap style instrument).

I did a cost benefit analysis of what it take to turn this into a player. I determined I would need new pots, new pickup, new tuners, and a new fingerboard. I decided that for me it wasn't worth keeping.

So I opened an RMA on Amazon.com and shipped it back. I have to say Amazon.com was extremely gracious and professional and they issued a full refund within 24 hours.

I give Amazon.com five stars but this guitar one star.

Good book and CD.Gives you some interresting voicings.Tab is good and clear.Some nice styles and patterns.If you are a beginner to intermediate player, you can read and figure out what is being played, but it is hard to keep up and play along with the CD as Robben plays it so much faster.Something good to strive for though.

I'm quite pleased with this book.It offers a nice balance: uptempo shuffles, instrumentals, ballads, etc.It's hard to fault the accuracy of the tabs, too.Only two details prevent the book from getting the fullfive-star review.First, it offers nothing from Talk To Your Daughter,which, to my mind, features some of Robben's best blues guitar work. Second, while the tabs are accurate, the book lacks any kind of editoralannotations, introductions, etc. that would address (and help explain tothose interested) Ford's sophisticated musical ideas.

Original American Blues: Guitar Arrangements (Creative Concepts Publishing) [Paperback] Review

I found this to be an outstanding "Late Beginner" Blues book. Great arrangements -- nice balance between complexity and style. I've recommended it to many newer players. However, this book will drive you NUTS. For some reason the the tracks on the CD do NOT correspond to the order of the songsin the book. It's crazy. You waste a tremendous amount of time trying to marry the track and page.

Beyond Basics: Acoustic Blues Guitar [VHS] (1997) Review

This video features Keith Wyatt who is an accomplished guitarist and excellent instructor.Keith appears in many guitar instruction videos.

He starts off introducing the I-IV-V blues progression and teaches the progression in the key of E using open position 7 chords.He also shows the student how to spice up the progression using embellishments and base notes.The second section Keith teaches the blues shuffle in the key of E and again shows the student how to spice up the progression with embellishments and base notes.He also demonstrates some very basic turnarounds.At the end he introduces the use of a capo but doesn't go into much detail.

He leaves the student not only with the ability to play some pretty cool sounding blues progressions but with some tools and advice that the student can use to play around and develop additional embellishments.

All of the material is very, very simple and straightforward.It does not cover soloing or anything very technical.A beginning guitar student could get a lot out of this.An intermediate student who has no experience with acoustic style blues guitar can also learn a few tricks and have some fun going through the material.

Fender Blues Junior Hot Rod Series with Optional Amp Cover- Black Review

IF you are looking at getting a Blues Junior, you are basically a stay home practice/player, home recorder, or real small gigger.

Most of the great sounding CRUNCH amps are really meant for large gigs like Hiwatt, Marshall and most Orange's.

Only Orange of those makes a nice crunch in a small amp, but it's not cheap either.Almost 800.

If you want a Blue Junior, you've already decided to get a tube amp and one with EL84s for their crunch, and NOT 6L6 and not an amp for it's amazing CLEAN sound, like say the Fender Reverbs.

Bottom line, this is an amazingly affordable and superb sounding amp at all levels of crunch.

I rate it at a 5 because of it's very reasonable price, especially used.I don't know truly if the newer ones since 2001 are as good as the American made ones, so you'll have to check that out.I don't like these reviews that seem to put all Blues Juniors under one review umbrella when they are different makes at different times, so check out the date info and compare them IF you can.Let your ears determine, not a review or persons opinion.

All I can say is I've searched and played amps for a long time now and I like 6L6 tube amps for clean and EL84's for crunch, all tube and for home non-gigging crunch the Blues Junior is the least expensive best sounding way to go.

As for problems, the main one I've heard is that the tubes don't last as long as other amps, that they are setup to be "hotter".I don't know if this is true, but my attitude is: if that's what it takes to make it sound like this, I LIKE it.

Also, don't get caught up with the "MOD" bug.Yes, there are zillion things you can DO to a Blues Junior.My only advice is, should you want to do this to YOUR amp, let it be your SECOND Blues Junior.If you can't afford a second copy, then don't go messing with the first.

People are always whining about how things don't sound like they did in the 50's.Well, they probably don't remember how while an amp might have sounded superb, the recording technology was in it's infancy and so what they 'heard' on records was a pale shadow.So to sound "like" your favorite Fender amp player, I'm very sure you can make this modern baby sound that bad if you set it up just wrong in the right way.

Good luck, and let your OWN ears, in comparison, sell an amp to you over time.

The Power of Delta Blues Guitar, Vol. 1 & 2 (2005) Review

Whilst Rory Block is a great teacher her style is not to my liking sat all. The DVD says Delta Blues guitar - but as the DVD starts she even says its showing you how to play "Coutry Blues"!

For me the country style conflicts with the original idea of what the delta sound is - I think its wrong to advertise this as so.

As a result I think it's a little misleading. Left me a little dissapointed in the choices of songs especially as some have been changed by her. There's also a rather dissapointing ballad "The Water is Wide" which does nothing to add to the "extras" on this disk. It's tacky!
For me Rory borders on the edge of shouting and bangs the guitar so hard it looks like she might do herself injury at some point. Her style - like her dress sense - is forced and I feel a little uncomfortable watching her play. She hammers through some songs at a terrific pace and I found this very off putting. The songs that she does play she teaches well (I watch a lot of training vids and women always make the best teachers - imho). If your a fan of hers you'll like this DVD but if you just want to learn Delta blues songs as performed by the original artists you'll be left feeling a little dissapointed.

MTD Kingston "The Artist" Bass Guitar (4 String, Fretless, Transparent Blue) Review

I was new to bass guitars 2 Years ago, so I decided to up the bar with my MTD Kingston Fretless 4 string before I became proficient on a fretted 4 string bass.

Dean Markley Blue Steel , 5-String LT 2678 Bass Guitar Strings (.045-.125) Review

While I use many other strings for my 4 strings, in fact currently enjoying a surprisingly good sounding set of Famous #351 on my Fender P Bass 4 Famous #351 Strings Bass Guitar String Set (Medium Gauge) , for my Fender P Bass 5 there is only ONE set of strings that will do, and that is Blue Steels. With other 5 strings the B goes dead and lifeless all too quickly, and the warmth of the tone just dies out. With the Blue steels the bottom stays fat and juicy, and the highs sparkling, for several months of hard rocking. You really can't beat a good P-5 and Blue steels, the combo will never let you down.

DVD-The Fingerpicking Blues Of Mississippi John Hurt Review

This is not a note-for-note transcription of John Hurt's songs.Rather, Sebastian and Traum try to convey the feel of Hurt's style as they have come to interpret it.Not to say that they've changed the songs much -- they will get you very close, and then the finer details can be picked up by listening to the records.Also it becomes quite easy to figure out songs not included in the DVD once you have gotten the hang of it.

It's worth mentioning that they do not teach you how to fingerpick, so it would be helpful to have a little experience with that style. (don't worry -- the only "fingerpicking" song I knew before the DVD was Paul McCartney's much simpler "Blackbird," and I was able to pick up the basics of John Hurt in a few weeks.) The songs are nonetheless difficult to master, especially if you plan on sometimes singing along with them, as everyone should.

Finally, the conversation between Traum and Sebastian and the interview with Sam Hood are warm and fascinating.4 stars because they could have included more of John's songs and definitely could have discussed more about his life in Greenwich Village.

I've gigged with this strap for the past year & it still looks & feels as good as the day I bought it!Even though I've taken it on and off of my guitar repeatedly, the ends show no signs of fraying or premature wear (unlike some other straps that I've used).Unlike a previous reviewer, the dye on mine hasn't run at all, & I've gigged on a sweltering hot stage during the summertime in Florida while wearing a white shirt!

Standing in the Shadows of Motown: The Life and Music of Legendary Bassist James Jamerson (Guitar Book) [Paperback] Review

This book and CD combination examines the music of James Jamerson, the studio bassist on most of the early Motown hits.Until rather recently, Jamerson was unknown to the general public and not widely known to musicians.Nonetheless, his playing was very influential and many bassists today consider his playing the gold standard of bass guitar in popular music.
This book is valuable as a reference for the history of Motown, but it is primarily a teaching tool.It is organized into three parts. The first 78 pages give a biography of Jamerson and put his work into historical context.Part two (17 pages) is a compilation of data: descriptions of bass equipment, recording facilities, accompanists, and discography.Also included in this section is a four page "Appreciation of Style" by Anthony Jackson that attempts to analyze the musical elements that made Jamerson unique.Part three contains 90 pages of transcriptions of Jamerson bass lines and accompanying text.The transcriptions go with the CDs described below.
The CDs and transcriptions are the heart of the set.The CDs feature Motown tunes with the bass lines played by over two dozen "all-star" bassists (e.g Marcus Miller, Jack Bruce, John Entwistle).Bass is on the left channel with instrumental accompaniment on the right. The bass lines are transcribed by the author and the transcriptions are accompanied by short bios of the artists who play the lines.The tracks on the CDs are interspersed with short interviews of people who knew Jamerson.The artists reportedly donated their services as a tribute to Jamerson and the bass lines and accompaniment were recorded in a variety of circumstances. Many tracks are recorded in home studios.The quality varies, but all tracks are well played and all are useful teaching tools.I thought the variation of sounds would be a drawback, but it is a very interesting part of the project.The best Precision Bass tones are not necessarily from the artists you would expect.(Not everyone tries to duplicate Jamerson's tone.Geddy Lee was approached backstage at a concert and contributed "Get Ready" on either a Steinberger or a Rickenbacker.Lots of fun.)
The level of the transcriptions is somewhat advanced.Transcriptions are given in traditional bass staff (no tab) and the rhythms will give your reading skills a workout.There are very few specific comments about fingering, right-hand technique, or damping.Yet the range of difficulty is from dead simple (beautifully rendered) line to lines that will challenge the most advanced player.(The challenge is rhythm and feel not lots of note or big stretches.) Beginning to intermediate players can use this book, but will benefit greatly by using it with the help of a good teacher.
One can quibble with the historical overview.It is quite readable, but doesn't dig deeply into any of the tough issues it raises (e.g. Jamerson's drinking and emotional stability, Berry Gordy's business practices).Since the focus is on the music, some of this reticence is laudable.However, one important musical controversy that the author fails to pursue is the question of the true credit for recorded bass lines in the era when Motown was moving from Detroit to LA. (Many tracks were demoed by LA studio bassists and then cut by Jamerson as well.There is still debate as to which track made it to the final recording. The question is acknowledged, but no new information is brought forth.)Another musical deficit is that there is very little about the interplay between Jamerson and other members of the rhythm section.(This is in contrast to the author's better-written (if slightly less important) book on the James Brown rhythm sections.)
Even with those minor issues considers, this is an extremely valuable book.It is clearly a labor of love and will be an extremely valuable learning tool for any bassist with the fundamental skills (or support) necessary to ap

Classic Guitar Styles of Duke Robillard: A Guide to Playing Authentic Blues, Jazz and Rock 'n' Roll (Guitar Educational) [Paperback] Review

Yes, the CD is worth the price alone. In one ear you can study the rhythm side of each track and in the other ear start to work on the many choruses of each track. Duke wants you to understand what he's doing and where it comes from. He's as interested in the guitars as he is in the music and the book is loaded with information about the history of the music he plays and the instruments he plays it on. There's a great section of suggestions for listening and anecdotes of the greats he's studied and played with throughout his career. I suspect co-author Dave Rubin has done a lot to make this package so accessible.

Also check out Duke's DVD lessons on his hero, T Bone Walker, along with a Hot Shots DVD of lessons and a concert DVD of him playing.

Godin LGXT Solid Body 3-Voice Electric Guitar (Trans Blue AAA) Review

The Guitar is very playable and worked well with my VG99 systems (once you set up the VG99 to handle the guitar) Functionaly I had no complaints.

My complaints are with the appearance of the guitar.I purchased a LGXT AAA in Transparent Blue and It looked nothing like the Pictures. The coloring was very dark (hardly "transparent") and the wood grain was not visible in standard room lighting (under direct sunlight it was visible but I tend to play in darker bar environments).I was very disappointed.

When you purchase a guitar of this Grade you have expectations and this time I was let down.It looked nothing like the pictures from the website or the owners manual.Heck the serial number even looked like it had been re-stamped to include the "AAA"

Next time I need to see the guitar before I buy.Not gunna use Amazon for this type of purchase again.
