AB 38 Inch Blue Cutaway Acoustic Guitar with Gig Bag and Accessories Review

AB 38 Inch Blue Cutaway Acoustic Guitar with Gig Bag and AccessoriesThis guitar is very good, is very solidly made. The extras are the perfect starter kit; come in handy, last for a great while since the guitar is well made I have no need to replace strings. I have had it for 5 months now and it has been a good instrument to me; the guitar keeps up with my rough novice handling; bumps against walls and doorways, and it remains steardy. The color its beautiful, I name it (indeed I did) Luna de Octubre - Octuber Moon.

Rhythm and Blues Guitar (Guitar Educational) [Paperback] Review

Rhythm and Blues Guitar [Paperback]I love Cornell Dupree's playing. He is one of my favorite rythym guitar players. I've been a professional musician for 35 years now and I've seen him many playing in all kinds of musical settings playing many different styles of music. No matter what he does he always remains himself. He's on some of my favorite disc's. Aretha Franklin, Donny Hathaway, Freddie King, Stuff, King Curtis, Paul Simon, and countless more funk, R&B and pop sessions. (Look up his catalog if you get the chance. It's amazing.
Though there is a lot here to learn from the lessons and it's all practical, useful real world stuff for me it didn't cover enough ground. As an intro it's good but he is such a sophisticated player it just left out too much.

The way he voices chords. The way he riffs between chords. These are all huge parts of his style and here it only scatches the surface.
Don't get me wrong. There are many beautiful things to learn here but I hoped for something that would dig deeper.
Go out and buy it despite my review. He is an original and whatever you get from this book will be worth your time.

Jazzin' the Blues: A Complete Guide to Learning Jazz-Blues Guitar (Book & CD) [Paperback] Review

Jazzin' the Blues: A Complete Guide to Learning Jazz-Blues Guitar [Paperback]I liked this book/CD as it allowed me to play along with the music right away. I am a blues/rock player of modest ability, so I found this approach to jazz for people with a blues background a perfect introduction to the form. The theory is clear, the explanations lucid, the tablature flawless. The best part of this package is the music! It is very cool, nice and jazzy, yet blues players can relate to the structure and so learn very quickly. The accompanying CD is beautifully played by live musicians with the subtleties of touch, dynamics, and artistic phrasing that are perhaps the most important lessons one can learn from this outstanding package. Well done! Highly recommended for beginner/intermediate players who nevertheless enjoy stretching their musical range.

Dean Markley Blue Steel LT 2034 Acoustic Guitar Strings (.011-.046) Review

Dean Markley Blue Steel LT 2034 Acoustic Guitar StringsThis was the third set of strings I bought for my acoustic guitar. The first one was a Martin phosphor Bronze light, great strings with a great sound, as I was (and still am) learning to play the guitar, these strings helped me to build the necessary calluses on my finger tips but they were killing my fingers in the process, and it was really hard for me to bar some notes on the upper frets as they were really hard to push on. So I decided to sacrifice a little sound and go to nylon strings, so I bought a D'Addario EJ45 Pro Arte set, they were a blessing for my hurting fingers but having heard the beautiful sound produced by the phosphor strings made me miss them a lot. I still wasn't satisfied, I wanted the sound coming from the metallic strings but also knew that I just couldn't play with the set I already had, so I spent hours and hours in Amazon searching for the right strings, that's when I read a review about the Blue Steel Light being the perfect ones because of the sound they produced and because they were as soft as they can be, so I took the risk and ordered them, and perfect they are!, the sound is just great and my fingers are not all complaining and I can even play bar notes anywhere on the neck, just what I was looking for.

The 21st Century Pro Method - Blues Guitar: Rural, Urban and Modern Styles [Spiral-bound] Review

The 21st Century Pro Method - Blues Guitar: Rural, Urban and Modern Styles [Spiral-bound]First of all, you will learn something new by anything Don Latarski produces. This man creates good music and great learning material.

Okay, I'm an experienced player and when I buy something I usually get things that will take me into new places.I can't really say this book is a HOW TO kind of book.Instead, I'll say that this book is full of ideas and that's the kind of thing I look for.

I really don't care to play like anyone else so I shun books that show me how to play in this person's style or that person's style. And this book doesn't do that.I think it will let you be you.Best of all, it has LOTS of ideas. You could probably find all the things in this book on the internet somewhere but you'd spend a long, long time finding it and even if you found it, unless you knew what it was, it would be useless.

If you have some chops and you are looking to get into blues, start here.Go page by page and let Don show you what's in the blues. And, so you know, there's more to the blues that three chords and five (maybe six) notes, and Don shows you lots of jumping off places for your own enjoyment or research.

Get it.

Silvertone Blues Master Electric Guitar, Transparent Red Review

Silvertone Blues Master Electric Guitar, Transparent RedI'm fairly new to guitar playing, but I've owned several already, and this is by far the best I've invested in. It's easy on the eyes with it's beautiful color and finish, and overall just a gorgeous guitar. It has a slim profile which isn't expected but quite nice as it's not as heavy as other guitars. I've read that the red finish varies from guitar to guitar, but on mine, you can clearly see the wood grain through the finish and it's beautiful. Silvertone has a reputation for quality and this particular guitar has a lifetime limited warranty. It's very reasonably priced for this quality of guitar. I found it difficult to find one for sale, so that must be a testament to it's appeal as people just aren't getting rid of them. The sound is amazing. Seriously, I had several electric guitars prior to this, and the moment I plugged it in, the difference in sound was undeniable and amazing. The best way I can describe the sound is deep, mellow and soulful. It produces great sound no matter what you do with it. The humbuckers are decent as well, and it turns out they're interchangeable with Gibsons, etc. Overall, a great guitar.

Ronnie Earl: Blues Guitar With Soul Review

Ronnie Earl: Blues Guitar With SoulThis is an interesting DVD featuring bluesman Ronnie Earl as the instructor. There are multiple simultaneous views of Earl while he demonstrates what he is doing (including a shot of his intense facial expressions). The first part of the tape focuses on substitute chord voicings that Earl uses to make the changes interesting (6 chords, 9 chords, 13 chords, etc). The second part of the tape covers his style of soloing. The main point that Earl makes (and it is the way he learned to solo) is not to worry about copying solos note for note, but to get the feel of the solo.He advises playing along with such greats as Magic Sam and Otis Rush.As another reviewer wrote, Earl uses a minimum of notes to achieve a maximum of expression and urges the student to do the same.

This is not a beginner's video. If you have developed the feel for blues changes (eg, 12 bar blues), know your pentatonic scales, and want to add finesse to your blues, Earl is definitely an excellent player deserving your attention.

Acoustic Blues Guitar (The Ultimate Beginner Series) [Paperback] Review

Acoustic Blues Guitar [Paperback]Great book and CD. I am a beginner and have used Keith Wyatt's Acoustic Guitar Basics to start. I moved to his Blues Guitar Basics and found it a little too difficult. This one seems too start at a better level for me. Explanations are great and the book is easy to follow. Blues Licks You Can Use: Softcover with CD (Guitar Educational) [Paperback] Review

Blues Licks You Can Use: Softcover with CD [Paperback]This is a good compendium of blues licks. It covers licks in many different styles. It is a very good supplement to the author's Blues You Can Use series. However, intermediate and advanced guitarists will find some examples of tasty, authentic phrasing and style between these covers. I definitely recommend this book.

Blues/Rock Soloing for Guitar: A Guide to the Essential Scales, Licks and Soloing Techniques (Musicians Institute: Private Lessons) [Paperback] Review

Blues/Rock Soloing for Guitar: A Guide to the Essential Scales, Licks and Soloing Techniques [Paperback]I was at the point where I was playing blues scales too much.I took the time to learn one scale a week and played them thru these backing tracks mimicking the styles of the songs.I learned a lot. This guy takes you thru all types of playing styles from many of the greats in each solo. His two note exercise in Mixalydian mode (seventh scales) and minor seventh scales (very similar to blues scales) got me motivated to get deeper into the Mixalydian mode and learn them. That one two note exercise alone leads to better playing. I hear them used by Hendrix, Freddy King, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and other aggressive greats including Johnny Winter. I have improved a great deal.I would suggest this for someone with over 5 years of experience who is very able to read tab. My only wish is that he puts out a second edition in the same exact style. If he did I would suggest a strictly slow blues book in differant scales with the same use of multiple artist styles.

More Blues You Can Use (Guitar Educational) [Paperback] Review

More Blues You Can Use [Paperback]I think both this book and the original "Blues You Can Use" are terrific.I learned a ton from the first one, and I'm learning another ton from this one. What I like best about these books is that the material never sounds stilted or dull--as it does in too many other books.
Be warned, though:this book is quite a bit more demanding than the first one. It's almost like there was supposed to be a "middle" book between the first one and this one. There is some EXTREMELY fast playing in the practice tracks. It will take me lots and lots of practice and patience to get them down.
Beginners should steer clear of this book. You'll only be disappointed.Try the first "Blues You Can Use" book instead.
That being said--the stuff sounds exciting.I can't wait until I master all of it.It's a great chance to learn how some of those great high-speed riffs I've heard in the past work.Because I don't think I'll ever be able to work them out on my own.

Blues You Can Use Book of Guitar Chords (Blues Guitar Instruction) [Paperback] Review

Blues You Can Use Book of Guitar Chords [Paperback]This is perhaps the best guitar book I ever bought. I have it for a year now and I use it daily, and it never ends... the amount of ideas the author shares is amazing.... you can actually see the fretboard and how it works!

The progressions are eye openers. No more do I have to play a song the same way twice...

I recommend it greatly to every guitar player.

Complete Rhythm Guitar Guide for Blues Bands [Paperback] Review

Complete Rhythm Guitar Guide for Blues Bands [Paperback]A book that was exactly what I was looking for.Lotsa chords, lotsa theory, lotsa rhythms. Not just 30 pages of copy this and copy that for 20 somithing bucks, but 159 pages of a compendium of blues styles that is really helping me expand my knowledge of playing blues rhythm guitar. It is just about the right "level" for me to learn. Alot of the early stuff is easy but like most books it gets more challenging the father I get into the book, so I would rate this book for someone a little more than beginner to intermidiate or so.The CD that came with it did not correspond with numbers given in the book and it took me all of five minutes to listen to it and correct the track numbers.A small price to pay for finally getting a book I can sink my teeth into so to speak. If you don't want to learn theory you can skip over that part but I believe theory is helpful so I like it!If I was a teacher and a student said I want to learn blues rhythm guitar, this would be the book.

Blues Guitar Inside And Out (Guitar Educational) [Paperback] Review

Blues Guitar Inside And Out [Paperback]This book is invaluable! I had piano lessons and guitar lessons as a kid but I never "got it." I read this book, and now I "got it." For the first time ever I know where chords come from, and I know the basics of how notes are chosen for the songs on the radio.

This books focuses on Blues, but the theory part will apply in principal to other styles of music. As for the Blues -- this book is one-stop shopping! Besides the theory from which scales, chords, and songs are made, all the notes for E and A across the entire fretboard are presented. More chords than you want are in there. Drills in E and A are in there. Numerous 12-bar and 8-bar Blues patterns are in there. Fifty little licks are in there. And the history of Blues music is in there.

Invaluable.

Hal Leonard Guitar Method - Blues Guitar: 6 inch. x 9 inch. Edition (Hal Leonard Guitar Method (Songbooks)) [Paperback] Review

Hal Leonard Guitar Method - Blues Guitar: 6 inch. x 9 inch. Edition) [Paperback]...but some sections seemed unnecessary and/or so poorly covered (e.g. blues & major scales, styles of the 3 Kings) to the point of being useless.I also found some of the recommended chord shapes problematic (making some tracks unapproachable).

Good bits for me, were things like: a really good, simplified version of the SRV classic Mary Had a Little Lamb (blues style) and You Shook Me -- challenging, doable & they feel and sound good. Some other later songs seem either over simplified (e.g Look at Little Sister and I'm Tore Down) & dull or overly difficult (e.g. Stormy Monday blues). The Harmonized Shuffle Patterns was something new & interesting.

Overall a 3 or 4 out of 5. Its low cost and simplicity help offset some of its short comings. While certainly not a comprehensive or lush book on the blues it is not intimidating and is one to help you on the way. I prefer some other similar books in this genre but none is perfect and this one is probably worth working through.

100 Tips For Blues Guitar You Should Have Been Told (Book & CD) [Paperback] Review

100 Tips For Blues Guitar You Should Have Been Told [Paperback]I didn't order this from Amazon because they showed only 64 pages and had no details about the book itself. When I actually saw the book, I was quite surprised at all the information it contained in its **168** pages. After the usual introduction and how to read notation sections, the other main areas are:

Timeline: A Little Blues History
Blues Harmony
Blues Melody
Blues Technique
Style Analysis (of Muddy Waters, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Elmore James, Howlin' Wolf and John Lee Hooker)
Survival Tips for Playing
The appendix has a good listing of chord charts and scales

Overall, it gives you a brief history of the blues and makes every effort to throw some of that history back at you in the larger instruction portions of the book. The book teaches you the basics in a well written thoughtful manner with good larger tablature and diagrams. There are pictures, but only when it seems to be needed for the novice to understand what is being talked about. It would have been nice for the book to be spiral bound, but unfortunately most instruction books aren't.

The cd that comes with it is also a nice addition. It goes over what's included in the book quite well.

101 Must-Know Blues Licks (Guitar Educational) [Paperback] Review

101 Must-Know Blues Licks [Paperback]I bought "101 Must-Know Blues Licks" based on strenth of couple
other books of Wolf Marshal that I own: "Best of Jazz Guitar" and "Guitar Jamming - Classic Blues". I have seen "licks collection" type of guitar books before but this book is by far the best.
Licks included are real life - easily recognizable lines that you can attribute to guitarist mentioned in text. Both standard notation and tablature are included. Licks are organized in collections of major blues styles: Pre-War Electric, Post-War Electric, Country and Early Chicago, Memphis, Texas, Modern Chicago and Texas, British, Postmodern.
Notation is VERY well annotated: leading tones, chords arpeggiated, question/answer, turnaround etc are all clearly marked. Smaller "licks within licks" are named. All that greatly enhancesease to learn and reusability of those lines.
Each lick is recorded twice on CD - normal and slowdown speed (usually slow enough to pick the notes easily by ear). Each section of licks is recorded using guitar tone (both axe and amp) reflecting typical guitar tone of the style and the guitar and amp used are described in detail in text.
I HIGHLY recommend this compendium to any intermediate guitarist in need of solid blues vocabulary.

Blues Rhythm Guitar (Master Class) [Paperback] Review

Blues Rhythm Guitar [Paperback]Keith Wyatt writes excellent books and this one is no exception. This would be a good book for a near-beginner who wants to learn basic blues rhythms on the guitar.

The instructions are concise and thorough without being too wordy. The accompanying CD matches the written material and helps the student hear the written parts.

A very nice feature is the explanation of triplets as compared to straight (one-and-two-and) time. This explanation of the division of the beat is vital information for all emerging blues guitarists.

This book is a good starting place for blues rhythm books. After or with this book, I would recommend also Larry McCabe's 101 Razor-Sharp Blues Guitar Rhythm Patterns, andafter that McCabe's most impressive and comprehensive Complete Rhythm Guide for Blues Bands.

Blues Guitar Bible (Guitar Recorded Versions) [Paperback] Review

Blues Guitar Bible [Paperback]This Bible really contains a lot of really good blues, representative for the different styles. All the notation is collected form other "Recorded Version Guitar" books, which means that you get notes anf tabs, but not chord boxes.

Blues by the Bar: Cool Riffs That Sound Great over Each Portion of the Blues Progression (Guitar Educational) [Paperback] Review

Blues by the Bar: Cool Riffs That Sound Great over Each Portion of the Blues Progression [Paperback]The most helpful book by far when it comes to putting it all together and yet, keeping if fairly simple. If there is one better I sure haven't found it! It teaches you how to build the house not how to pound nails. Theory, scales, and even riffs out of context are merely pounding nails if you don't know how to put them together. Some of the lines might be tough for the beginner from a technique basis but are easy enough if your chops are up.
With a little practice you can mix these lines all over the place and really come up with some nice solos. You'll get your money's worth and then some with this one. About ready to give up trying to play Blues? This is the book for you!

Beginning Fingerstyle Blues Guitar (Book and Audio CD) (Guitar Books) [Paperback] Review

Beginning Fingerstyle Blues Guitar [Paperback]Fingerstyle is an obscure genre. It baffles many guitar buffs since there are hardly any established tutorials. I've been obsessed with this style ever since I heard the likes of Robert Johnson, Doc Waston, Leo Kottke etc.

Having scanned the web I purchased three books -

Beginning Fingerstyle Blues - Arnie Berle (the one in question)
Art of Contemporary Travis Picking - Mark Hanson
Art of Solo Fingerpicking - Mark Hanson

It only makes sense to compare these books since in addition to money, we are investing time. Choosing the right book would save you lot of time, and much exasperation. Beginning Fingerstyle Blues is one of the finest guitar instruction tutorials I've come across. The instruction is lucid and the approach very logical. The book takes you step by step through fingerstyle blues building up your right hand ability (and confidence) to the extent where you can play and sing (oh yes!) the blues with relative ease, only after 12-18 months of dedicated practice. 12 months is a fairly short period as fingerstyle tunes can get rather complicated. I've always been impatient when receiving instructions and tend to skip a section or two so as to reach the end ASAP. But this book kept me engaged throughout as it made me believe that everything was achievable, as long as I tried and didn't deceive myself. I rate it five stars, for the instruction and for keeping me hooked throughout (after all learning should be fun!). Like the others have said it also contains 5 full pieces at the end to add to your repertoire, which clearly is a bonus.

The books by Mark Hanson are equally profound in content and tutoring. Mark's books score a point or two above the rest of the fingerstyle books as he (Mark) gives very clear instruction regarding right hand placement, how many fingers to use, pinky finger placement, whether or not to use thumbpicks/fingerpicks and many other finer points which you will require answers to once you immerse yourself in fingerstyle guitar. There are awfully few competent sources who can give you these answers. You will not find these details in Beginning Fingerstyle Blues. It left me confused initially but thanks to Mark's books I figured the right way out.

Many of you may be confused about which books to buy so that you do NOT regret in 12 months time; after you have put in your best and expect returns. Having owned 8 fingerstyle books and 4 fingerstyle instruction videos, I strongly recommend Beginning Fingerstlye Blues and The Art of Contemporary Travis Picking. If you cannot buy both books for any reason, pick either and buy the other in a year's time. You will not need any video instructions if you have these two books. These two are the very best out there and I don't see any books better than these, in the fingerstyle genre. They both share common grounds such as:

1. Both cater to absolute beginners - you can manage even if you cannot change chords confidently
2. Both focus on Travis Picking (alternate bass with melody) which is quintessential to fingerstyle guitar
3. You will be a fairly advanced fingerstyle player after having successfully completed either book

In my opinion no book is bad. You will get to learn something or the other from every book. But there are very few that are jewels - these two books undoubtedly are. There is a reason both these books have been rated 5 stars; they work wonderfully well and the results they provide are truly fulfilling.
