The Blues Bass Handbook (Guitar Educational) [Paperback] Review

I bought this book for a blues fan friend of mine who is moving to blues bass. Unfortunately, I now have to buy another book because this one stinks. I teach drums, play guitar, and dislike this book.

Problem #1: The book doesn't actually have many bass lines in it. In fact, it is mostly a rehash of the same line on the first page. The blues bass is so much more than one line repeated over and over for "rhumba", "shuffle", and "slow blues" songs.

Problem #2: If you're a beginner, you will learn more by just listening to an Albert King or Muddy Waters record. And if you know that your strings are E-A-D-G (intermediate), then you won't get much from this book at all.

Problem #3: Words and tabs per page? Well, if you can recall those days in 5th grade when you triple spaced your reports and repeated the same sentence forty times, then you understand the format of this book.

I don't want to be too harsh, but, I just wasted my hard earned $$$.

Bottom line: DO buy a blues bass book (I would like to jam with you someday), just DON'T BUY THIS blues bass book.

Learn Guitar Techniques: Blues Review

Stuart Bull is one of the big 3 lick library has in its camp of teachers the others being Danny Gill, Jammie Huphries.He has a great technique to his teaching method and explains very well the scales used and the actual fret numbers called out during solo playalong.The types of blues numbers covered are very good and consist of vairing tempos and key change examples.This is a good dvd to buy for those looking to expand their knowledge of soloing and rythym playing in the blues style.Great camera angles and crisp audio are earmarks of lick librarys proffesinal filmed instructinal dvd's.They are simply the best out there right now for begginers right through intermediate.

and this dvd wont disapoint.Also of mention is the great backers you get to play along to as well that are the very same used in the lessons.Quality top shelf through and through.

Definitely get a more thorough book with a CD included, this won't do it as a standalone guide.Progresses through the basic blues concepts: chords and progressions, with songs for E and A blues demonstrating fills, turnarounds, intros and endings, solos.Then moves on to songs/chords for minor blues, country blues, rock blues and jazz blues. Scales and chord reference at the end. No frills; devoting a page to each concept.You really need to have an idea to begin with of what blues 'sounds' like to make this book work.

Levy's Leathers 2 Jacquard Weave Hootenanny Guitar Strap, Review

There's not a whole lot one can say about a guitar strap, but I'll try. This one is sturdy and adjusts more easily than some I've tried. It's fairy thick and the material doesn't slip around on your shoulder easily. Aesthetically, the woven print is abslutely beautiful. The photo cannot do it justice. The colors and rich and vibrant and the weave is tight, not chintzy or frayed. I'm very pleased with the product and the price.

Silvertone SS11 Guitar & Amp Package, Cobalt Blue Review

i got this guitar for Christmas two years ago. when i played it,it didn't work. the jack was broken and the whammy bar didn't fit. the spaces for the strings near the last pick up were too small and the strings got stuck. i had to use a screwdriver to take the back panel off and pull the strings out. when the i got the panel off, i saw that the entire inside was rotting and had been painted over. when i turned the guitar over, the all of the electrical parts fell out and it took forever to get them back in place.

the shoulder strap pieces came completely off. to top it all off, it sounds horrible. the amp works well but because the guitar bolt isn't properly connected, the strings rattle and make a noise that sounds like an electric banjo. the pick ups buzz awfully and the whammy bar broke off too. don't buy this, it's not worth your money. its sad but Guitar Hero is more fun than this. the only reason i give it 2 stars is because of the picks, amp, and dvd included.

I purchased this book several years ago (when it came with tape instead of CD).I'm somewhat of a novice (intermediate at best) guitar player andwanted to learn how to play lead breaks through the changes.The tab isalmost a necessity for me.This book is probably the best source I havefound.The tab shows the notes and the tape lets you hear how the breaksshould sound and, when you get good enough, you can play through with thetape.Chords, tab, and notation are all shown.I highly recommend thisbook.Wish I could find one on country guitar as well.

The Freddie King Collection (Guitar Recorded Version) [Paperback] Review

Freddie King was a blues master with both the guitar and voice. And this folio is nice because it combines both vocal and instrumental pieces. Freddie played with fingerpicks, which yielded his bright articulate tone. So you'll want to consider that if you want the same effect; though not me, I can't hack those things. The tab is well done and like all Hal Leonard folios, is expertly engraved and edited. The only tune really missing here is 'Going Down', however, many other classic cuts are included.

Both this book on Rhythms and the complimentary book on solos is the way for any budding blues musician to get started. Geared toward the beginner, this book teaches rhythms within a single string format, so understanding complex chord structures is not a requirement. Jim Weider covers some classic tunes (Going Down, Hideaway), classic licks, and his own composition to provide a pleasant and lucid lesson on how to play electric blues guitar.Jim has a friendly manner and the excellent screen shots make it easy to see what he's doing.There is also space for the student to play along while Jim and band play back-up.The tab is excellent, thorough, and accurate.

The video covers both rhythm and soloing techniques and pentatonic scales up and down the fretboard.For example, Jim covers the rhythm part to Going Down (done with power chords) and then uses the E pentatonic scale in different positions to show how licks are done in these different positions on the neck.Naturally, he shows you how to play famous blues licks that every electric blues player should know.

Homespuntapes is well known for its quality instructional videos and this is no exception.This is a creative tape with a fine instructor that has good visuals and a good tab book. Aurora Electric Guitar Strings 9 Gauge Blue Review

I have to say that so far these have been the best guitar strings I ever put on my Strat! I love the color but what makes them great is that the coating gives a smooth feel to the strings. Playing lead runs and and string bends are very easy with these strings - it's hard to describe. I bought two sets and still working on the first one. The seem to last a long time. I play every day (play in a rock band)
and I usually have to replace strings once a week. These have been on my guitar about a month and still not ready to change them. This justifies the price - they do last longer. I don't think I'll be going back th the other strings I used to use.

Robin Trower: Classic Blues/Rock Guitar Review

I enjoy Trower's flavoring of electric blues...and am pleased to recommend this product. being a player for about 40 years, I know my way around the guitar and in recent years have had the luxury of not playing in a band, which, requires dedicating off-playing time to keeping current with set music, which, is not always your personal prefernce. So, for a hoot, I have bought a few of these instructionals just to see what they had. Of the few I've seen, I like this one, and most especially recommend it to developing players. It opens with Trower in concert probably late80's/early 90's, which, allows the viewer to grasp what the man is about and to hear the finished product of what he is about to show in the lessons. Trower offers good info on his tone, (probably one of the things I like best about his sound) in the way of set up, amps/setting and effects. From there he explains the basics to the degree that will allow an ambitious player to take it from there, so to speak. Covers some nice licks, that will open a guys mind a bit, as his style is not so standard rock/blues from perhaps higher profile stars. Trower is a very interesting guy and from what I can tell in this product, seemingly a very nice-humble guy, which is most appealing. The slow-motion-looping ability allows a player to go over an over the material covered. Last, as a treat...he shows the format on a couple of his hits. Not for the novice, but, for someone who has the basics down and wants to be a better player...this is a very good product...By the way...Trower is on Tour in the US...January, starts in Florida. I'm going to catch him in Seattle in Feb...catch him while you can, I doubt he will be touring for another 30 years. Best Regards

Mahalo U-30LB Painted Economy Soprano Ukulele (Light Blue) Review

This was the first uke I bought because I'd never played one before, but I really wanted to learn, so I opted for a cheapo one. I've owned it for a couple of months and I absolutely love it. I've named it my "blukulele".

Negative:
Okay, this is a cheap uke, and it certainly looks like it. The frets are painted wood, not metal, the paint job is kinda sloppy. The strings are kinda too high off the fingerboard for my liking, but this is a minor problem. The gig-bag is basically useless. It's so thin with literally NO padding, so I really don't understand why they even give you one, unless it's just because of the novelty of it matching the paint job. I keep mine in the box it came in so it doesn't get damaged. It's just as easy to carry the uke around with you than to keep it in the gig bag. The only use I could see for it would be to keep water off, and it doesn't even seem fit to do that job well.

Positive:
For its cheapness, this uke still sounds great, and it seems solid enough (good for kids who might be careless with it). Also, I was surprised by how well the strings hold tuning: after a few days, I rarely needed to tune it. This is something you can't see in the picture, but on the back of the head stock, the tuners are shaped like dolphins, I think that is absolutely adorable and fantastic!! This thing was so easy to play. All i had to do was print off chord charts and I'm a pro now! It's soo much fun too! This is GREAT for kids who want to try an instrument, or people who want to learn ukulele on a very cheap starter uke. The paint job just looks really cool, I mean who wouldn't love a powder blue uke! (The blue color is just slightly lighter than it looks in this picture. I will try to post a customer imaged).

Overall, I love this thing, it's so great. I'm contemplating getting another color just because I love all the options they have, maybe purple or orange.

This book, like so many "easy" guitar collections, is insipid. There is no accompanying CD, probably because there's no way to make these "arrangements" sound like the original.Imagine taking a great song and then playing it on a kazoo.Now, if you get off on going through the motions of learning songs -- and are not too concerned about the outcome --then grab one of these.Frankly though. you'd be better off with internet tabs.

Epiphone LP Standard Plus-Top Les Paul Collection Electric Guitar, Trans Blue Review

This guitar is increadible for the price. I just got mine last month and have been blown away by its quality. It looks every bit as good as the $2000+ Gibsons, it really is gorgeous. The only complaint I had are the pickups. They're a bit muddy, I think I'm going to replace them with some Seymour Duncans. But even then this instrument rocks! Buy it, you'll be glad you did.

Complete Blues Guitar Method: Beginning Blues Guitar Review

In disagreement with another review, I found this useful with acoustic as well as electric.True, Matt Smith plays an electric for all the demos, but that's not really a problem. If one is even mildly comfortable with their instrument, it is easy to make the adjustment.And, it is NOT heavy metal orientated, as suggested in the other review. True, it is not country blues or fingerstyle, but it is still all blues.
Issues:
1)Matt does some really nice demo riffs, butis no tablature or music provided.
2)Some techniques he uses are insufficiently clarified.
3) Although a support pamphlet is promised by visiting the website, I couldn't find the pamphlet.I put a note into customer service.
4.The audio tracks for the book are provided, but are not downloadable.

I'd give this a 4 star for content, but had to drop it to a three for the support issues.

There are 35 songs covered in the Anthology, spanning B.B King's entire career, including many of his classic tracks. Unfortunately there is no discography of the songs - which would have made obtaining the recordings much easier.

2 boxed sets may help:
The "King of the Blues" (Mca ASIN: B000002OMC 4 CDs) has 17 of the songs.

Another set "The Vintage Years" (Ace Records UK ASIN: B00005QX62 4 CDs) has 18 of the songs.

There is a great deal of overlap between the 2 boxed sets, but if you get both you will have 29 of the 35 titles from the Anthology.

Kenny Sultan : Guitar Blues Review

This is an excellent teaching tool for blues guitar - acoustic fingerstyle.Mr. Sultan grades the lessons from slow blues to fast-paced boogie to ragtime.He sensibly keeps it to 2 keys with the greatest concentration on E.I would say the lesson is best for intermediate players in that it helps to have a better than basic grasp of blues playing and the fingerstyle method.Mr. Sultan shares his knowledge of many standard licks and riffs which are easily transposed into other keys. There is a companion book which you probably can do without although it is helpful. notably with one or two of the turnarounds.I would certainly recommend getting the cd's West Coast Blues and Guitar Blues - not only because they are good within themselves, but listening to them is a great learning tool.The DVD does not require reading of tab or music and it helps to develop an ear.I am not all that familiar with a wide range of video/dvd teaching aids, but if you wish to move beyond folk style strummings to full blown solo playing, this is excellent.Not only that, but the wealth of licks that are taught will enable you to fit in to a blues jam and aquit yourself fairly well.It offers a very intimate teaching style that allows you to go at your own pace.Once you have practiced enough to get up to speed, you get to playing along with Kenny and even throwing in a few of your own licks.I really liked this.You can jam along to your heart's content. This is an excellent product that delivers.Mr. Sultan obviously is an experienced teacher and takes his time to walk you through each tune.Highly recommended.By the end of it you have a good toolbox of tricks and would qualify as a competent player. What I found from a personal perspective, was that these lessons introduced the concept of playing inside the chords and as such led on to a clearer understanding of swing and jazz styles.

Basic Blues Guitar: Essential Progressions, Patterns and Styles (Private Lessons / Musicians Institute) [Paperback] Review

This is a very basic book.The lessons are simple, and even a pure beginner can start playing basic blues rhythms within a short time.I feel it necessary to emphasize that a beginning guitar student should NOT start with this book.A beginner should learn fundamentals prior to cracking this book open: fundamentals like open position chords, basic strumming patterns, and bar chords.

Although I wouldn't call it comprehensive, the book covers various blues styles: 12-bar blues shuffle, Chuck Berry style, minor blues, BB King big band blues, Kansas City style, 8-bar, slow blues, etc...There are a lot of examples.The book covers 7th chords, 9th chords and introduces 13th chords.There are a lot of practice tracts for 7th and 9th chords.There are also some single note rhythms.

The book is accompanied by a CD with 40 play along tracks that go along with each lesson.

All in all, it is a good introduction to basic blues guitar playing.I highly recommend it for beginning guitarists.An intermediate guitarist probably won't find anything in this book to be very challenging, but nevertheless it would still be a good introduction to blues.

I've been going all out with creating a solid instrument base for my sound studio.I bought a capo for every guitar I own.For my acoustic, I purchased this particular capo.It's what I call a "c-clamp" although it's probably not a good description.It's fast and effective at changing the location of the guitar nut.No buzzing (unless it's caused by your own playing) and if you remove it after ever use, the rubber always resets itself so that the string marks aren't permanently there.Good technology, good engineering.

DR Strings Pure Blues Pure Nickel Wrap Round Core 11-50 Review

I've been using DR pure blues exclusively for 15 years or so.I use both the 12 and 11gauge set on various guitars.

I haven't tried the newer 'coated' long life strings so I don't know how they compare but I can say that these strings will sound good *much* longer than others such as ball, diadarrio etc..

The heavier gauge strings last longer than lighter gauges too as they don't stretch out as easily, so if you keep them clean by washing your hands before playing and then wiping them off afterwards or using fastfret or some other string cleaner, these will last a long time.I only change strings 2-3 times per year compared with my friends who play lighter gauge strings that change every few weeks.

Also the tone you get out of these is so thick and nice that even a worn out set sounds better than 'slinky' strings when they are brand new, in my opinion

The caveats of course are that it takes your fingers a while to get used to playing heavy gauge strings, and as the other reviewer complained about you can have intonation problems if your guitar is not set up correctly.You may need to adjust the truss rod and intonation, especially if you have a trem bridge like on a strat.. on a fixed bridge like most gibson guitars it may not be necessary.Make sure that you 'break them in' by stretching them somewhat when you first put them on..

I gave it three stars based on it's value to me personally. This is strictly for the beginner in my opinion. Any intermediate worth his salt could take the basic boogie line in E (You know the one!) and come up with 25 simple variations in no time. Probablyhalf of them would match ones in this book.And the other half would be just as good. Some of the lines have riffs in them also but still not too difficult. Again, for the beginner only!

Levy's Leathers Hootenanny Style Guitar Strap, Review

I got this strap from Amazon because this particular Levy's Hootenanny strap is hard to find anywhere else. It's a beautiful strap in person and doesn't disappoint in either appearance or comfort. The one knock against it is the rather slick nature of the polypropylene backing. It's comfortable but if your guitar is neck-heavy this strap won't hold keep the guitar from sliding like a leather strap.

That being said, this strap complements my guitar beautifully and I would have no reservations about buying it again, even with a little neck dive. :)

DR Strings PHR10 Pure Blues Nickel Medium Electric Guitar Strings Review

I was introduced to DR Strings about four years ago by an employee at a big-box-mega-corp-a-rama music store when I needed some new strings. I had been mostly using D'Addario 10's and while cost-efficient, I was tired of having to change broken strings every few days.

I asked what he thought was the best set of strings, and he immediately pulled these off the rack for my approval. "I gig a few times a week with them and in the two years I've used them I have never broken a string."

I don't gig myself, but that's about as good a testimony you'll get when shopping for strings. You won't, however be guaranteed never to break strings as they haven't invented the saddle-proof guitar string yet.

As it is, DR Strings are perhaps the finest string you can get without moving into boutique prices. In fact, it seems like DRs are starting to get cheaper thanks to more outlets carrying them, so they're only a little more than most mass-market strings.

They possess excellent resilience and provide excellent tone and I haven't used anything but DR since then. Give 'em a try.
