Seymour Duncan SH6 Distortion Humbucker Pickup (Bridge, Black) Review

The first modification I made on my Ibanez RG270 was installing this pickup.This was 15 years ago, and I was 16.The main reason I chose this model was the name... I wanted to play heavy metal.Fortunately, this pickup is much more versatile than the name lets on.Yeah, you get some great metal tones from it.Tight, punchy bass, screaming hot high end and impressive mids.It's a high output pickup, but it cleans up nicely.Back off the volume knob a bit, and you get a very crisp, bright clean tone.The only criticism I have is that it might not be balanced enough for jazz players (I dabble in all types of music, including jazz)...But I don't see any looking to this pickup anyway.

Fishman AFX Pedal - Delay Review

This is an awesome delay for acoustic. Unlike most effects pedals these are voiced for the acoustic, not overpowering and not mechanical sounding, very warm.I also have the AFX Chorus and the AFX Delay.With all three the possibilities are endless.Stand alone you can get a lot of interesting sounds and effects.Ive run them through my amp and direct and was blown away by the quality of the sound . I don't know a lot about drums, but we purchased this set for my 9 year old to start with.After seeing sets being sold in the music studios and stores for $100 less, I decided to give Ludwig a chance even though it was a little more expensive.I think the extra money was well worth it.These drums are well built, look great and are easy to setup.Ludwig has videos on their website which show you how to put them together and we had the whole set together in 30 minutes.I was a little worried, as the music teacher said they would need to be tuned, but that turned out to be an easy process and unless you are a professional drummer, I doubt you will notice even if you don't tune them.The set comes with everything you need including cymbals, a seat and sticks.I noticed a lot of other sets leave out the cymbals, so beware of that.

The Kilted Fiddler [Paperback] Review

Over twenty years ago, Alan Lerwick released a book under the above title and published by Centerstream.It had a good number of tunes, some familar, some not.The familiar ones sometimes had unique settings.The scores seem to have been hand-drawn but clear.The book covered different types of tunes, grouped together.Mostly trad, but a few of Lerwick's compositions were included.I still have my copy, although it is falling apart from overuse.I was delighted to learn that the book was being re-issued in expanded form.The scores are typeset this time.Beautiful line drawings are scattered throughout (could have used many more!), and again the choice of material is great.Even if you have the original, get this one; if you don't have the original, all of its material is republished here.

Boss CE5 Chorus Ensemble Pedal Review

This is the best chorus pedal I've ever heard. I've only had it for a day and I am completely blown away by it. I have used other chorus pedals in the past like the Danelectro Cool Cat and Electro-Harmonix Small Clone and both of these pedals don't hold a candle to the sound of this pedal.

What I enjoy best about this pedal, besides all of the possible tonal variety, is the fact that this chorus isn't one of those lush sounding pedals, which I guess is a personal preference, but for my own personal style I needed something that was subtle, but you could tell it was there, and the CE-5 delivers in every possible way. You probably could get a pretty lush sound out of it using the depth knob, but again, it's a something I have little interest in.

I am running the CE-5 in conjunction with a TC Electronic Vintage Compression pedal, a Line 6 DL4, and an original Alesis Microverb and I'm also using a stereo amplifier setup. I'm into the chamber/ambient/avant garde jazz thing, so it's great that the CE-5 can provide me with the chorus sound I have been looking for all of these years.

Give the CE-5 a chance. I think you will be surprised by the results. It's time to sell my other chorus pedals now. If something happened to this pedal, I would replace it in a heartbeat.

PreSonus Comp16 Single-Channel Compact Compressor W/ Presets Review

I've installed a few of these in sound systems and portable recording systems that need to be run by inexperienced volunteers. The presets help avoid sonic disasters and the metering is helpful. Sound quality is pretty good, there's a little background noise but it's quite reasonable for the price. Compresses well, at least for spoken word uses. Balanced I/O is really nice to have at this price range, and is one reason I use them instead of an FMR RNC. I've rackmounted pairs of them on 1U rack shelves using the bottom center screw, although when mounted that way they're a little over 1U tall so I had to leave a blank rack space above them. I had room to do that in the racks I was using, but be aware of it.

Fishman SA220 Solo Performance System Review

As a classical guitarist, I am often under the mercy of the venue's acoustics and/or sound system on any given performance. To say that this is frustrating is an understatement. I wished that there was a way for me to be freed of this tyranny and be able to carry my own sound system. When I read about the Fishman Solo Amp, I immediately thought this could be it -the ultimate solution. It is truly compact and you can carry the guitar in one hand and the amp on the other in one trip from your car. And it does fit inside my trunk nicely. Set up is quick and easy.

Admittedly, all the reviews I read was for the use of an acoustic steel guitar, all glowing, but I didn't find a review using nylon classical guitar. Nevertheless, it got me really excited and finally pulled the trigger to buy it.

I use a Fishman under-saddle transducer on a world-class guitar. When I plugged it into the Direct Input, it sounds fantastic! But only when the gain is low. On high volumes, you lose the natural and charming sound of the classical guitar. This would be true of any other amp.

Needing more power for a more natural sound, I decided to buy the DPA 4099 clip-on condenser mic. This made it sound a lot more natural on higher volumes, and feedback issue is minimal which is huge by itself!

But I have mixed feeling regarding the sound, at least when it comes to classical guitar. It is rather flat and not very warm. You may be able to use a mixer to achieve a warm sound, but that defeats the simplicity of set-up purpose. Also, there is a background hiss that may be unacceptable to some classical guitarists playing a lot of quiet passages. I contacted Fishman regarding the hiss and they acknowledged that it is a known issue. But they offered a solution which is to pry open the panel and tape the ribbon wire to the side to avoid contact with the center structure. I tried this but I still can't tell if it made a difference.

I find myself still preferring the sound of my good oldAER Compact 60 using either DI or DPA 4099. It is very warm and natural. It just doesn't have the power for a bigger venue.

After experimenting more with the Fishman Solo, I was able to achieve the sound I wanted. The solution for me is to use both the DI on low-gain setting but coupled with the DPA 4099 condenser mic for a natural sound.This gave me a warm and fat sound that I dig. In fact, DPA has a double cable accessory that allows you to have less cable clutter. However, this cable is priced at $199 so I decided in the meantime to just use two separate cables.

The sound is great and I would still recommend it simply because there is no other similar equipment in this price range. The Bose L1 is too expensive and I think less compact. The hiss still bothers me and I remain slightly bummed by it but I think it is the best thing available out there for my purpose so I decided to keep it.

Now, if only AER can come up with a similar amp, I am so there!

Center Pitch CP2 Tuner Review

This tuner is a good idea but poorly executed.I used it for violin.The worst thing about it is that it uses up relatively small and expensive CR2032 batteries (2 at a time) very quickly.I didn't get many tunings out of a new set of batteries.Hard to believe; perhaps it drains the batteries even when off.It certainly seems that way.It is also a very slow responder.You can check finger positions only if you play scales very slowly.Suggest you look for a tuner that uses AA or AAA batteries with clip-on tuner pickup.This tuner is headed for the trash.

Since writing this I've heard from the company: "We did recently discover that we had a few tuners that were causing the batteries to short each other out.That is not normal--the batteries actually have an approximate 2 year usage life."They offered to replace my unit.

Since writing the above the company replaced the tuner twice, each time with the same result--it drops dead after 3 months or so even if you don't tune with it.So it's the third one that is headed for the trash.In its place I use the less expensive and smaller Cherub WST-550c that has been working perfectly for about 5 months on a single CR2032 battery.

Inside the Blues, 1942-1982 [Paperback] Review

Very well-written and fascinating overview of some of the key players in the history of blues guitar. Pithy biographical information, great resource lists of each player's crucial recordings, excellent examples throughout of guitar licks and phrases. This collection would be superlative if it contained a well-played CD of the hundreds of musical examples contained herein. It looks like the publisher is re-releasing this work with just such a CD in Fall 2006, but a lot depends on whether it sounds "canned" (like a lot of the Wolf Marshall stuff) or "inspired" (like the John Ganapes books). Dave Rubin is a good player, let's hope he puts some effort into the recorded CD to make this collection a truly five-star work.

Seymour Duncan SH-PG1 Pearly Gates Pickup, Black/Creme Bridge Review

This is a great pickup.I've got two guitars that feature this pickup, one a Lone Star Stratocaster and a custom built korina wood Telecaster.This pickup is smoking hot, with tone for days.It is essentially as the product review says, a modified PAF.If you play blues or blues based rock, that modification is really going to make a difference.Overall, these have the PAF sound, just with more bite.The 'Pearly Gates' referred to is the legendary Les Paul belonging to Billy F. Gibbons, he of ZZ Top fame.To hear these pickups in action, I would check out Top's last couple CDs.I believe that Billy had several guitars built using these pickups.Granted, his collection is very extensive, so you never know what you're listening to, but it'll give you a good idea.If you're mixing and matching these with another type of pickup, make sure you get a pickup with a comparative output.For example, I had originally intended to pair the Pearly Gates up with a Fender Nocaster pickup for my custom Tele.My builder advised me against this, as the dropoff in output when switching pickups would be overly drastic.I went with a Fender Texas Special Tele pickup instead, similar to the pairing on my Lone Star Strat.

Morley ABY Selector Combiner Routing & Switching Device Review

I don't hear any noticeable affects on the sound. It's battery powered, but the battery is only needed to power the LED lights - so one 9v battery can last well over a year. It does have a problem with making an electronic pop sound when you switch from one channel to another. In some situations, the pop is barely audible. In others, it's cringe-inducingly loud. It seems to be based on the electrical situation of the room you're playing in.

Fishman AFX Pedal - Reverb Review

This is definitely a high quality fx pedal! It's built like a tank and you couldn't ask for better quality reverbs - they are rich and lush and very "tweak-able." There are three reasons I give this 4 stars instead of 5:

1. This thing eats 9v batteries pretty quickly, quicker than most pedals I've used;
2. It didn't come with an AC adapter; and,
3. For $250, it should have come with the adapter and the kitchen sink.

That said, it's a very worthy pedal for acoustic reverb.

Schatten TC-STD Passive Tricone Resonator Guitar Pickup Review

I installed this on my new National M1 Tricone.I didn't want to drill holes, and really don't need a preamp built in, so this really fit the bill.

It took about 30-45 minutes to install, and it works great.I've gigged with it a few times, running it into a DTAR preamp/eq.It took less eq than my highlander I had in a vintage steel tricone.Sounded very natural.I'm very, very pleased.Really good results at a great price.

Robben Ford Highlights Review

This is a highlights video mainly comprised of selected material from Robben Ford's other instructional videos. If you plan to purchase them, you probably don't need this one. But if you are not sure, this is a nice sample of what's on the other videos.
None of Robben Ford's videos are really designed to teach the early beginner. He can REALLY play and has a deep musical knowledge. The DVD does provide great inspiration for the beginner, and that is how it seems many really good guitarists got started, hearing and seeing it, and saying THATS what I want to be able to do.
In addition to some instruction, Robben Ford and the Blue Line perform a couple tunes at the TV studeo. Good stuff!
There is some good bonus material on the DVD. Some other guitarists giving tips on bends, chord progressions, and using a pick. Also there are a couple of tunes from other highlights videos, one is BB King.
I also recommend Ford's Back to the Blues parts one and two DVD, a nice deal at about three hours run time. This is also pretty advanced stuff, but inspirational.
I highly recommend the New Morning Paris Concert DVD of Robben Ford. Really great performance and production!

Fishman Neo-D Passive Soundhole Pickup - Humbucker Review

I bought this sort of last minute because I was sick of using a microphone on my guitar for live performances.I read a lot of rave reviews about the single coil Neo D, but wanted to try the humbucker for a less noisy sound.

I play through a Musicman 212-65 with my electric.I don't yet have any kind of dedicated acoustic amp, so I also played the acoustic through the Musicman.For an electric guitar amp, the pickup sounded quite nice.Hardly any noise at all.Less brilliance than I hoped for, but I entirely blame the amp for that.

All in all, this pickup is totally worth it.I imagine with a nice acoustic amp it will sound nearly as good as the fanciest pickup systems.

Albert Collins Review

It would have been nice to see how to set up a guitar the way Albert Collins set one up. I don't really care about how to play Albert Collins in standard tuning...and why would anyone care, it's hardly necessary.

Way too much Keith Wyatt talking and way too little of Albert Collins relating to the viewer how he plays. A real dissapointment.

Seymour Duncan TB4 JB Model Trembucker Pickup Review

Before buying this PU i read a lot of reviews.Some said it was a hot metal pickup other said it was bright.I find this not to be the case.As a mater of fact, I purchased this because of the way it sounded on the Seymour Duncan web site.I was looking for a smooth sounding PU with a little heat, and I think that's about what it is.I put it into a mahagony guitar with a maple top (Carvin DC127) with an SH2 in the neck, and I have coil split switches on both PU's.I also have another DC 127 - alder wood - with TB6 and SH6n.

I use the guitar with the TB4 for stuff that is more mellow, R&B, light to moderate rock, and the TB6 for the heavy stuff.The TB4 is kind of high output, but not close to the SH6.The TB4 has a good sound, not harsh, especially not bright sounding.Those who say it is good for metal must have there drive turned way up, in that case, yes, it would be good for metal, but I find this pickup to sound good through a nice clean setting (I have a Carvin V3 combo and Digitech GSP1101).

I had to make a few extra settings on my setup to boost the output of this guitar when using both the TB4 and SH2n in combination because the band drowns me out, not so with the TB6 (even in single coil mode).But that said, it is a nice PU, better than the ones that came on the Carvin.And there is a wide range of sounds I can get with the different combinations of settings using the coil split switches.

BurstBucker 2BurstBucker 2 is wound in the range of Gibson's '57 Classic, with slightly hotter vintage output than the BurstBucker #1, and works well in the bridge position with a BurstBucker #1 in the neck position.The variations in pickup output and tone came from inconsistencies in winding the bobbins, a result of the lack of automatic shutoffs on Gibson's winding machines in the late 1950s. Seth Lover, who invented the humbucker, always said they wound the bobbins "until they were full," and original examples suggest that employees stopped the winding machines after the counter reached approximately 5000 turns. Dean Markley ProMag Plus XM Acoustic Guitar Pickup Review

This would seem to be a nice addition to a part-time amplified acoustic guitar. It installs easily. The downside is that it has a very weak output. You have to really crank the amp to hear the "amplified" signal over the guitar itself. To be fair my Dreadnought is pretty loud by itself but I expected better.

Seymour Duncan SH2 Jazz Model Humbucker Pickup (Neck, Black) Review

I did some research before buying 2 new humbuckers for my Ibanez S470 and came to the conclusion that the dynamic duo of Seymour Duncan's SH-2 and SH-4 were for me. I found the 2 sold together as a combo pack for a great deal at $110, when otherwise they're $70-$75 each. So I was happy I got what I wanted for much less than I was prepared to pay but enough about that.

I gathered from the Seymour Duncan website that these 2 pickups are his favorite combination as they allow for the widest range and diversity for sound and playing style. The site also lets you see which famous musicians are using their pickups as well and it turned out that most of the rockers and metalheads listed had these 2 in their arsenal. That helped since I play mostly hard rock and metal.The day I had them installed I actually found myself playing with the SH-2 for the majority of the time because it just sounded so good. Everything was crystal clear and bright. It provides a very warm and full sound that actually sounds like your using a different guitar altogether. Chords and picking sound distinguished at all volumes. It's leaps and bounds beyond the stock neck pickup which sounded too dull and weak to keep my attention. It really gave me a renewed interest in alternate playing styles with clean sounds. I understand now why S.D. likes this combination so much as the SH-2 and SH-4 can work really well together when blended with the channel switch.

This a really nice sounding pickup that'll be a big improvement over a stock one or an upgrade for those looking for a great clean sound. Whether it be for jazz, clean rhythms, fast and slow playing styles, this is an excellent pickup that you should pick up.

This is an excellent beginers drum kit, that is easily converted into a professional kit. The kit came complete down to the sticks, so you can assemble and play straight from the box. The skins were a little thin so you may have to replace them with thicker skins unless you are a jazz musician who likes the brighter sound of a thin skin. The kit is a great value for the price, the quality pleasantly suprised me, the cymbals have great hard ware, but I think I will replace the cymbals themselves with something heavier later on. Otherwise a great buy.

MXR M288 Bass Octave Deluxe Effects Pedal, Blue Sparkle Review

This is a really cool octave pedal. It's very adjustable for the amount of octave effect you want, with the girth & growl knobs plus a dry knob to let you keep some dry signal going to your amp if you run it at the instrument level. I prefer running through the effects loop of one amplifier, while leaving a totally dry signal going to a second amplifier. If you have 2 amps with at least one having an effects loop and a stereo chorus pedal, try this: plug your bass into the chorus pedal and then output to the 2 amps. Plug this octave pedal into the effects loop of one amp, and set the effects level around 30-40%. You'll be running a completely dry sound thru one amp, with the effect coming thru the other, with still some dry sound coming through that one as well. It's awesome, much better than running through one amp. Although I should point out it's also quite good with one amp. But the 2 amp deal is mind boggling. To quote a poet, it "will soon shake your windows and rattle your walls." Oh, and the adjustable range mid+ button is a cool feature as well...

LR Baggs Para Acoustic D.I. Review

I've been using one of these for a few years now and I love it. I play a Seagull acoustic that I had a piezo pickup installed in. The parametric EQ on the LR Baggs box lets me dial out the harsh tinny sounds that are over emphasized by the pickup, and dial in the warmer tones to more closely match the un-amplified sound of my guitar. I use this as a direct box live, for recording, and as an EQ when I run my guitar into an old tube amp I like to use. It works great for me in every case, and I highly recommend it over other Acoustic DIs I've tried.

Morley Quad Box Review

This pedal is perfect for anyone running more than one amp or output device. I use this pedal to switch between a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe tube amp and a Marshall 100W solid state amp. I run acoustics thru the Marshall and solid body electrics thru the Fender. Run them together and a get really great mixture of sound. Switching is easy and the input selector can be used to shut down input while changing guitars. Great pedal!

As he tells in this charming video, one of Roy's mentors was Pink Anderson - a performer who made his living playing blues in traveling medicine shows - a fixture in turn of the century rural america.Roy brings the best of that tradition to the stage - charm, humorous stories and great guitar picking and he does so without your having to buy a bottle of elixir.I enjoy this dvd for a variety of reasons: the setting, the reference to the past through the feeling that one is looking in on a lost art (story telling and music together as performance), the performer's use of environment (sirens, and a plane passing overhead) to accentuate his art and his comfort with himself as both an artist and a guitar player.This is a beautiful piece of Americana and well worth your time and investment.

Dean Markley 2670 Blue Steel Cryogenic Extra Light Bass Strings Review

These strings are one of my faves because they last a long time and hold their tune very well with even the roughest playing styles. They have a nice and clean higher end and a full lower end. They sound awesome with active pickups (haven't heard them with passive pickups) and hold up well to popping.
